Making function fun & supporting children to integrate their senses
Ribble Valley Children’s Occupational Therapy is an independent paediatric therapy service providing specialist Occupational Therapy & Sensory Integration assessment, advice and treatment. Based in the heart of the Ribble Valley but offering provision throughout the North West and beyond.
Paediatric Occupational Therapy works to improve children’s function and engagement in every day activities (occupations) such as pre-writing & writing, dressing, self-care, feeding, play & hand skill development, and gross motor activities. Using playful, meaningful activities children are supported to participate in their daily activities and reach their potential.
Sensory Integration therapy combines Ayres’ Sensory Integration theories with assessment & clinical reasoning to unpick how or why sensory systems are impacting on function, which then enables intervention or adaptations to support specific sensory difficulties or impairments.
Observations, assessments and treatment sessions can be carried out within the home environment and / or within mainstream & specialist education settings. Education sessions and training sessions can be arranged at different locations.
Virtual appointments for consultations, assessments & training are also available.
Occupational Therapy input can be accessed at any age, at any time throughout a child’s education, and to support with a wide range of conditions. Occupational Therapy input can be beneficial for children with: Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, sensory regulation difficulties, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyspraxia & Developmental Co-ordination Disorder; Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome, and Anxiety.
The Occupational Therapy process involves:
-> referral
-> information gathering
-> assessment(s)
-> intervention planning & goal setting
-> intervention
-> outcome measurement
-> follow up planning / discharge planning
Although Occupational Therapy practice is underpinned by the above process, assessment is ongoing throughout - including during the interventions themselves. The process is collaborative with parents, carers and any other key stake holders within the child’s life.
Referrals can be accepted from parents, carers, schools, SEND Teams and other health professionals.
After gaining my MSc in Occupational Therapy with the University of Cumbria I gained clinical experience (in both public and private sectors) across the lifespan in the fields of mental health, palliative care & neuro rehabilitation before specialising in paediatrics, and special educational needs.
My undergraduate Psychology degree reinforced my intrinsic curiosity in all things brain & behaviour so it was a natural progression to undertake further post-graduate studies in neuroscience & become an Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner.
